BELTS (OBI)

 

 

KYU – “GRADE” Minimum age of 8 years. A rank designation signifying a level of achievement below black belt. The colour of the belt worn by the Kyu grade becomes darker as progress is made toward the black belt. There must be a minimum of 3 months between Kyu grades. The minimum age for Shodan black belt is 11 years old, and a minimum of 6 months between 1st kyu and the Shodan grading.

 

10TH KYU - WHITE

9TH KYU - ORANGE

8TH KYU - RED

7TH KYU – YELLOW

6TH KYU – GREEN

5TH KYU – PURPLE

4TH KYU – PURPLE, WHITE STRIPE

3RD KYU – BROWN

2ND KYU – BROWN, WHITE STRIPE

1ST KYU – BROWN, 2 WHITE STRIPE

 

Under 8 year olds take a progress test, similar to a Kyu grading but also learning to count in Japanese and general karate knowledge
